The Area We Work From
Stratford-upon-Avon is a popular tourist destination owing its status as birthplace of the playwright and poet William Shakespeare (1564-1616), widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. At the time of Shakespeare's birth Stratford was a prosperous market town with a population around 2,000. His father was a glove maker and wool merchant and his mother, Mary Arden, the daughter of a wealthy landowner. At the age of 18 Shakespeare was to marry Anne Hathaway and start a family.
Some scholars refer to the year between 1585 and 1592 as Shakespeare's lost years attempting to account for this period and the reason he went to London. Some say it was to avoid a charge of poaching. They estimated that young Shakespeare arrived in London around 1588 and began to establish himself as an actor and playwright. By 1594, he was not only acting and writing for the Lord Chamberlain's Men but was a managing partner in the operation as well. His success in London theatres made him wealthy and in 1597 he bought New Place, one of the largest houses in Stratford. Although his professional career was spent in London, he maintained close links with his native town. Further property investments in Stratford followed, allowing him to make a profit and spend more time writing.
Shakespeare died in Stratford, aged fifty-two, on the 23 April 1616, and was buried in Holy Trinity Church two days later. His widow, Anne, died in 1623 and was buried beside him. Shakespeare's family line came to an end with the death of his grand-daughter Elizabeth in 1670.
